Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a lighthouse with a striped tower and domed lantern room, set inside an oval frame edged with twisted rope. The lamp had been dark for three nights when Mags Pennock hauled the paraffin tin up the last of the iron stairs at Scarrow Point, her father's torch clamped in her teeth. His knees had given out on the ladder in March. The district office in Plymouth had promised a man by the end of the month, which in Scarrow meant after the spring tides, so the Gull Ann and her crew were left to find the harbour mouth by guesswork and bad language.

At the top the wind came through the gallery rails with a noise like a kettle left on. Cloud sat grey and heavy over the water, the way it had all week, and below the cliff the sea folded itself over the black crystal rocks and spat white curls that hung for a moment and then fell back. Mags had watched those curls from the kitchen window since she was small. Her father used to say the sea was only drawing breath before it said something rude.

She trimmed the wick the way he had shown her, two fingers' width, and struck the match twice before it caught. The mantle bloomed. Through the glass she could see the tower below her, white and dark and white, the stripes he had repainted every summer with his sleeves rolled and his cap pushed back. Out past the reef a lantern swung twice and steadied.

The beam swept out over the cloud and the spray and found the Gull Ann's mast. Mags laid her hand on the cold brass of the lantern room and counted the sweeps, one, two, three, the way he had taught her, until the boat turned for the gap in the rocks. Then she sat down on the top step, pulled her coat over her knees, and kept counting until the boat was in.
