Compass and lighthouse with Find Your Own Way banner
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencilled tattoo design shows a dotted-rim compass with a star rose on the left, linked to a striped lighthouse rising to the upper right. Two ribbon banners read FIND YOUR and OWN WAY, with flames and smoke curling behind the compass and light rays radiating from the lantern. The linework is bold and the shading is in greys with heavy solid areas, and the design is placed centrally on a white sheet.

The fog came off the Ashby Cut before dawn and sat on the water like wet wool, so Nell Harrow steered the Marguerite by the compass alone. Its brass bowl swung and settled, swung and settled, and she kept her eyes on the needle rather than the black shapes of the willows. Her father had always said the river would lie to you about distance but never about north.

Ahead, where the cut bent into the old lock, the light on Scarrow Point should have been burning. It had been dark since the winter, when the keeper, Mr Dunstable, went into the infirmary in Thorne and never came back out. Nobody had replaced him. The bell rope still hung from its iron post, sun-bleached and frayed, but the lantern room had gone to pigeons.
Nell tied off the tiller with a bowline and climbed the bank with a torch in her teeth. The lantern glass was grimy but whole. She found the paraffin can where Dunstable always kept it, behind a sack of coal dust, and filled the reservoir with hands that smelled of tar. The wick caught on the third match. Light spilled over the reeds in a slow, deliberate sweep, and somewhere downstream a horn answered her with two short notes, then one long.
When the Marguerite slid past the Point an hour later, the fog had thinned to gauze. Nell kept the lamp burning until the sun cleared the poplars, then set the compass on the sill and watched the needle hold true. Every bargeman on the Trent knew the Point. Nobody asked who was lighting it, and she did not mind being the answer to that.
