Lightning bolt and eye on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A bold tattoo on the outer upper arm combines a red lightning bolt outlined in blue with a green eye drawn in black linework. Yellow, orange and red circles and loose painted brushstrokes sit around the bolt, and a short line of script runs along the lower edge. The mixed palette is set against a dark background, with the design wrapping across the shoulder.

The oven clicked on at ten to four, and by the time the first tins went in, the sky over the car park had turned the colour of weak tea. Dad always said you could read the day from the first loaf. Mine came out lopsided, with a split running down one side as if something had got into the dough during the night and tried to get out.

He used to score the tops himself, quick zigzags with a razor, humming under his breath. The only line I ever caught was "oh you pretty things", sung flat and cheerful, while he cut the sun-shaped rounds that sold out before the office workers reached the door. He said a good scoring was like a jolt through the crust, and that the bread should look a little bit dangerous. I thought he was showing off. After the funeral I kept the razor in its drawer and used a plain knife, and for a year the loaves came out sensible and round and nobody remarked on them.
At half six the light came up pale over the bins, and Jas from the flat above came down in her dressing gown, hair flattened on one side, wanting something for her gran's breakfast. She held up the split loaf and asked if it was meant to look like that. I said it was an accident. She said it looked like the start of a storm, and that she'd take it, and she paid for it with a fistful of coppers.
After she left I took the razor out of the drawer, wiped the blade on my apron and scored the next tray the way he would have, fast and a little careless, letting the crack open where it wanted. The sun came through the window and lay across the cooling racks, and I hummed the line wrong and kept going.
