Sugar skull woman with roses on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A sugar skull portrait of a woman with blue eyes, red lips and painted skull-style face markings is the central subject, with dark hair flowing behind her. Two large purple roses with black outlines and shaded petals flank the face, and grey-shaded leaves sit at the top. Bold black outlines and smooth colour shading are set against a dark, glossy backdrop on the forearm.

Dear Teo, the purple roses came off the Manchester van this morning with their heads bruised flat, so I spent the first hour at the back of the platform kiosk picking out the worst petals with the ticket clippers. Mr Akinola, who runs the tea urn, says nobody in Leeds will notice once the shading is on. I am not so sure. Roses should look as if they were cut that morning, not as if they have been carried across the Pennines in a sack.

The face went on after lunch, while the 14:10 to Carlisle was loading. White first, then the black hollows round the eyes, then the little scroll lines down the cheeks that Nana used to doodle on the edges of her shopping lists. I gave her blue eyes, which you will argue about, because the photograph has grey ones. But the photograph is the only thing we saved from the flat, and grey looked flat under the paint. Blue did not.

Mr Akinola came along the platform with the stationmaster's clipboard. They want it hung above the waiting room bench for the first of November, beside the lost property board. I said no. Then he showed me the price of the gold leaf for the frame, and I said yes, but only for a week.

Come home for the week. Bring the good scissors and the bad news, and we will eat the bread Mama would have burned. The leaves at the top took the longest. Each one has a vein you can follow with your thumb, the way you did on the windowsill when you were small, watching for the last train to be called. Love, Marisol.
