Woman in a peaked cap with roses on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman's face in profile wears a peaked cap with a pearl trim and curled hair, and a single tear falls from one eye. Two peach-coloured roses sit beside the face, with dark green leaves and black scrollwork filling the background. Bold black outlines frame the flat colour fills, set against a brown upholstered backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mabel kept the ticket hutch at Harrow Green with the flap propped open to the wind, and every ticket she tore that August came out a little crooked because her hands were cold. Mr Vane had told her on the Monday that the fair would pack up on Sunday and head down to the coast. He said it kindly, the way he said everything he had already decided.

The boy from the coconut shy was called Tom Ashby, and on the Thursday he brought her a peach rose won off the painted board at the back of his stall, paper petals wired onto a stem that had been bent by a hundred hands. He had nothing else to give and said so. She pressed it flat inside her ticket book between the stubs for the dodgems and the Ferris wheel.

On the Sunday the wagons went out one by one, the horses leaning into their collars, the calliope wheezing its last tune down the lane. Mabel stayed in the hutch with her cap squared on her head and the pearls cold against her hair. A tear ran down and she let it, since nobody at a fair looks twice at a crying woman in a cap, and nobody had ever asked her to stop.

Then the boy came running up the lane with his coat open and his hands empty. He stopped at the hutch, breathing hard, and said Mr Vane was short a ticket seller on the coast road. She looked at him for a long time. Then she took the rose out of the book, tucked it under the band of pearls above her ear, and stepped out of the hutch to follow the wagons.
