Swirl butterfly flash design
Black and grey · Flash
A butterfly outline is built from curling black scrolls, tapering strokes and open circles of varying sizes. The linework is bold and uniform in ink, with thicker sweeps forming the wings and thinner curls filling the detail. The design is shown in solid black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Mrs Ada Pell had been tapping bobbins for forty years and had never once been asked to draw her own pattern, so when the new girl, Ivy, slid a torn sheet across the pricking bench and asked her to finish it, Ada nearly sent her back to the sorting tray. The sheet showed a half-made thing: a wing sweeping up from a thin black body, curled ends for antennae, and a scatter of small round holes where the pins would go.

Ivy had drawn it in Indian ink with a steel nib, the lines swelling where the hand had pressed and thinning where it had hurried. "It's from the station," she said. "The timetable board. Somebody painted a swallowtail on the spare panel and nobody ever took it down."
Ada knew the board. She had waited under it every Friday for her husband's train, back when Harold still came home from Derby with cinders in his collar. She could not remember a butterfly. She remembered only the tall clock beside it, and the way the platform lamps came on one after another down the line like a row of pins being struck.
They worked through the winter on the lace, Ada guiding the bobbins while Ivy counted the twists. By March the piece was a yard long and folded in tissue paper on the window ledge. When the stationmaster came to buy a collar for his wife, Ada unrolled the lace for him, and he held it up to the light and said nothing at all, only smiled and paid her the extra shilling she had not asked for.
