Black floral vine design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical design of a climbing vine with curling tendrils, five-petal flowers in outline and solid black, and pointed leaves. The linework is bold and uniform, with solid black fills on some petals and leaves and dotted accents scattered between the stems. The design is shown in black on a white background with no shading or colour, and it is arranged as a tall, narrow composition.

Dear Ada, the vine went up the north wall of the almshouse yard this week, the way you said it would if I stopped cutting it back. I stopped. Mr Pargeter wanted the whole thing pulled down before the damp got into the mortar, and I told him I'd do the pointing myself if he left the roots be. He laughed, then looked at the first flowers and went quiet.

Each one has five petals, Ada, the same as the ones you drew on the back of the seed packet when we were small. Some you left open and white, and some you filled in solid because you ran out of patience. The old woman in number four says her husband planted the original cutting in 1931 and it has never once flowered in the same place twice. I don't know if that's true. The little dots that come up between the stems look like rain that hasn't made up its mind to land.
Last night the curl at the top of the wall caught the wind and turned in on itself, and I stood in the yard with the lamp and watched it for longer than a grown man should. I think I'll stay on through the summer. The rent is low, and the vine needs somebody to tie it in as it climbs.
Write when you can. Tell Dad the gate still sticks and I've not fixed it on purpose.
Your brother, Sam
