Dear Hettie, I am writing this on the back of a timetable because the waiting room at Thornbury has no table left that isn't sticky with tea. The lilies you sent with Dad's cousin came through the post crushed flat, but I pressed the best of them between the pages of my old atlas and they have kept their freckles. You always said the spots were the only honest thing about a lily.

The stationmaster, a Mr Pell with a moustache like a broom, has taken to nodding at me each morning as the 7.12 pulls out. Yesterday he asked whether I was the woman who kept the vine on the signal box fence alive. I said I was. It climbs now past the second bolt, branch after branch of pale trumpets, and the tiger ones you insisted on lean out over the platform as if they are waiting for a train too.

I did not tell you I bought a return ticket to Carlisle last Thursday and sat on the wrong platform for an hour. The departures board clicked over and over. I watched a boy try to climb the trellis and a porter lift him down by the collar. Nobody noticed me counting the buds. There were eleven. By the time the light went orange I had counted nine blooms open and two still shut tight like fists.

So I am staying for now. The house is too quiet and the station is loud enough to keep me honest. Come in March if the trains run. Bring the good secateurs. Tell Ruth the seed packet she wants is in the tin under the sink.
