Peony and olive branch tattoo design sketches

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

Three sheets of tracing paper show drawn designs of peony flowers with leaves. The largest design has a full open bloom, smaller flowers, and sprigs with dark round buds and long narrow leaves, arranged in a diagonal cluster. The linework is fine and dark, with stippled dotwork shading in the petals and leaves, and the two smaller sketches on the left are lighter pencil studies.

Before the church bell, Maud Teague lit the ovens at the bakehouse in Sallow Cross, and her brother Tam sat on the flour sacks asking why the olive oil smelled of rain. She told him the oil came from the grove across the water, where the trees grew so twisted that no two branches agreed which way was up. The dough rose under its cloths while she talked, and she shaped each loaf with a knife dipped in oil.

Every morning a grey-coated stranger came to the back step with a basket of peonies cut from a garden nobody in the village had seen. He never gave his name. He asked for a loaf scored like an open bloom, with a sprig of olive pressed into the crust, and he paid in dark round buds, heavy as pebbles. Maud planted them in the yard behind the oven because she could not think what else to do with them.

Tam wanted to know what the buds were for, and Maud said nothing until the first hard frost. Then the buds split, and peonies came up through the cobbles, open as cupped hands, and the olive branches twisted over the yard wall. The stranger came back that morning, ate his loaf standing, and looked at the flowers a long while.

"They are not for keeping," he said. "Give one loaf to every door that is still shut before the sun comes up, and the garden stays." So Maud carried the baskets out in the dark, leaving bread on every step, and by the time the light reached the lanes the whole village smelled of oil and flowers.
