Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large lily blooms across the side of the torso, with soft grey shading on the petals and bold black linework forming the stamens and sweeping tendrils. The tattoo is shown in close, well-lit framing against a dark background, with a navel piercing visible to the left of the design.

The stargazer had opened a full hour before Nell reached the glasshouse, which lilies were not supposed to do. She stood at the end bench with her torch held low and watched the outer petals curl back like sleeves pushed up for work. She counted the stamens the way her father had taught her, one finger at a time. Eleven. The pollen on the tips was dark as wet ink, and the nearest stamen arched over the rim of the pot as if it were reaching for something on the far bench.

Six years she had been crossing that bloom with a pale Turkish strain, chasing a flower that would hold its shape in the cold of a Dutch auction hall. Mr Tesch from Amsterdam had already offered for it twice by telephone, and he wanted a name, not a number. Nell had no name. She had only the smell, which was salt and cut grass, and a feeling that the thing was still deciding whether to be a flower or a weather.
She did not send it to the auction. Instead she cut it at the stem with her father's knife, carried it across the field in the grey before dawn, and stood it in a jam jar on the upright piano at the Saturday dance hall in Holbeach, where the band's drummer was still asleep under a coat in the corner. When Edie Marsh came in to sweep the boards, she stopped and asked why the room smelled of the coast. Nell said it was only the lily. Edie looked at the bloom for a long time, then said it looked like someone had drawn the stamens on in a hurry and then decided to keep them.
Nell left it open on the piano all that night. By morning the petals had faded to the colour of a sky before rain, but the black stamens still reached out over the polished wood, unhurried, as though they had somewhere else to be.
