Shaded roses on a hip
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Three roses sit on a branching stem with leaves and curved swirl lines, with one open bloom, one bud and one fuller rose. The petals are shaded with soft grey gradients and fine detail, giving the roses volume. The design is in black and grey only and is shown diagonally across the side of the torso, above the waistband of jeans.

The third rose was the trouble. Nell had cut it at six that morning from the back wall of the glasshouse, where the old Albertines climbed the brick, and by eleven it had opened too far to sit beside the others on the trestle. She turned it slowly by the stem, the way Mrs Okafor had taught her, looking for the place where the petals still curled tight at the rim and hadn't gone soft and papery at the edges. Its shadow lay on the cloth like a smudge of pencil.

The bride had asked for something that looked like a sketch. Her grandfather had painted roses on narrowboats for forty years, Hannah said, and she wanted the bouquet to look as if he had drawn it in charcoal and forgotten to colour it in. So Nell built it from one long stem with its leaves set in pairs, a bud at the top and a full bloom lower down, then trailed two thin curls of willow down the side like the flourish a signwriter leaves at the end of a line. The open rose went in last, and it kept drooping.
Hannah's father came in through the marquee flap just before the vicar, in a suit that still had the shop creases in the sleeves. He stood over the table for a long time. Then he picked up the bud, the small tight one meant for the top, and held it to the light. He didn't say anything. He slid it into the inside pocket of his jacket, behind the order of service, and went out to find his seat.
Nell carried the bouquet down the aisle with a gap at the top where the bud had been. Afterwards, folding the cloth, she found one grey-green leaf caught under a trestle leg and pressed it flat inside the glasshouse ledger. Hannah's father had kept the bud. Somewhere in the reception it was still in his pocket, going brown at the tip where the warmth of him reached it.
