Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A purple butterfly sits on the upper left of the foot, with a large purple lily beneath it and black swirling stems extending across the skin. The wings and petals are shaded in violet and lilac tones, with darker purple in the lily's folds and fine black outlines. The design is set against a dark background, with the foot angled to show the top and side.

The butterfly arrived with the second downpour, clinging to the corner pole as if it had nowhere else to be. Its wings were closed and dull as a bruise until the light from the fishmonger's bulb caught them and they opened into violet and lilac. Maud had seen moths in the market shed for years, but never one that looked so pleased with the weather. She left it be and went on tying up the black wire vines she used to bind the stems, the ones that curled out of the buckets like handwriting.
A boy in a school jumper came running at half past nine, a fistful of coins gone soft in his palm. It was his nan's birthday, he said, and he'd been saving since August. Maud had one lily left, the big one she'd been keeping back for herself, its petals heavy and striped at the throat. She wrapped it without a word and pushed it across the trestle. He tucked it under his coat, and the butterfly lifted off the pole and followed him out into the rain.
