Line drawing of a woman with a leaf crown
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms a stylised female face with heavy-lidded eyes, a small nose and closed lips, framed by long hair. A wreath of leaves and small flowers sits across the head. The work is in one ink colour on pale skin, with no shading, and the drawing fills most of the frame.

The tide tables pinned in the ferry office are never clean, because Ilse Dunmore draws on them every Thursday while the boat is being loaded. You sort the post and stamp the manifests, so you have watched her for three winters: a biro set down at the crown of a head and never lifted until the face is finished.

She says the trick is to decide where the hair ends before you know what the eyes will do. Her faces come out with heavy lids and mouths that refuse to say anything. Nobody on Skarra buys them, but a gallery man from the mainland once paid forty pounds for one and asked whether she had drawn a second line for the leaves. She said no. The leaves are just where the line got tired and turned back on itself.
In February the gallery man rings the office asking for her. You tell him she took the early boat and did not come back for the late one. The harbour wall still has the chalk outline of where she sat. Under the stapler on the window ledge you find a sheet with one unbroken drawing: a woman with leaves threaded through her hair, the line running past the jaw and looping back to the crown.
You trace it with one finger, from the crown down the left cheek and around the wreath, and you find the line never quite meets where it began. You pick up the biro, find the gap she left, and carry on from there. The leaves, you notice, have one more than they did yesterday.
