Line art woman with flower crown on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line portrait of a woman with a calm, stylised face, wearing a crown of leaves and small flowers, with long hair falling to the sides. The black linework is thin and even, with the outlines of the face, hair and leaves drawn in simple unshaded strokes. The ink is black on pale skin, and the design fills the forearm against a blurred wooden deck background.

Dear Anselm, The sketch you left on my workbench at the bakery is still under the sugar jar, curling at the corners from the ovens. I have been baking since half past three, so you will forgive the flour on the paper. Nobody else has ever drawn me in one line without lifting the pen, and I did not know until this morning that you had gone the whole way round my hair without stopping.

The crown of leaves was the bit I argued with. You said laurels were for poets and I said I was a baker, and a baker needs something to keep the heat off her forehead. You laughed and put the little berries in anyway. The loaves came out at six, eleven of them, the crusts cracking like struck matches, and Mr Okafor from the post office bought three before he had his coat fully on.
I have not solved the sugar jar problem. I have decided the drawing is finished. You never lift the pen, so you never go back over a line and never tidy up what you got wrong. I rather like that about you, and I rather hate it.
Come in on Thursday before the shutters go up. I will have the first batch out and a heel of the sourdough with your name on it, and the drawing will still be there, looking at the door as if it expects you. Yours, Ruth.
