Woman with flower crown on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with closed eyes and short hair wears a crown of peony and other flowers, with a round shape behind them, and a collared dress with polka dots at the neckline. The linework is bold and dark, with the face, hair and collar shaded using stippled dots. The design is in black and grey and fills the upper arm, set against a dark polka-dot top and a wooden door in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the petitioners reach the eleventh step of the Glasshouse stair, you have already pinned the peony crown into the queen's hair and told her to keep her eyes shut. She obeys because she trusts your needle more than she trusts her courtiers. Outside, the moon hangs above the Vellan towers like a paper disc someone forgot to take down, and you think of the old Sallowmere law that says a queen must never look upon her own face while it is being made.

The collar comes next, a plain white ruff you have dotted with black pinpricks so the lamplight catches it like frost on a fence rail. The stipple takes hours. Your mother taught you to count the dots under her breath, and you count them now, one for each petition the chamberlain has refused this year. Forty-one. Forty-two. The queen's breathing slows and you feel the room lean in, the way a room does when someone is about to say the thing everyone has been avoiding.

'They want the river reopened,' she says, eyes still closed. 'Tell them I am asleep.' You tell her the moon is bright enough to read by, and that a sleeping woman does not wear peonies. She laughs, and the laugh pulls the flowers a fraction crooked. You straighten them, and when she finally opens her eyes the chamberlain's door is already swinging wide, the petitioners stepping through with their caps in their hands, and you realise the crown was never meant for the court at all.
