Linked little fingers in a circle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular medallion shows two hands hooking their little fingers together, with the hands rendered in stippled dotwork shading. The background is filled with fine concentric contour lines that look like a topographic or wood grain pattern. The tattoo is in black ink only, with the dots and lines giving the hands soft shading against the open skin of the forearm.

The pear orchard at Hollin Bottom had been planted in rows that curved with the ground, so that from the lane it looked less like an orchard than a bent piece of wood. Mags Thorley walked it every August with a tally book and a pencil stub behind her ear, counting the windfalls that the wasps had not yet found. That year the counting went slowly. Her brother Eli sat on the wall at the bottom field and would not come up to help, and she did not go down to fetch him.

She found the old boundary stone in the third row where the grass grew long, cracked across its face in lines as fine as hair. Someone had scratched rings into it long ago, rings within rings, the way a tree shows its years when you cut it through. Her grandmother used to say the rings were the ground remembering where the water had run. Mags knelt and traced one with her thumb, and the stone was warm from the afternoon.
When she reached the wall again, Eli had his hands wrapped around his knees and his little fingers were hooked together over the coping, as they had been since they were small enough to need reminding not to fight. She sat beside him. Neither of them spoke about the sale or the solicitor's letter folded in her pocket. She only tugged his finger, once, the way you test a gate, and he tugged back, and they stayed like that while the wasps went on at the fallen pears below them.
