Black and grey geometric blackwork tattoo of mountains, pine trees and clouds inside a diamond shape on the forearm.

Geometric mountain and pine forest on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped design shows a mountain range, layered pine trees and small clouds, with the peaks and rock faces built from angular facets. The linework is solid black outline filled with dense parallel hatching and open white areas, giving a flat, graphic shading. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits centred on the forearm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Surveyor Royal of Caddenmoor had one rule for the high country: never draw a peak you have not climbed. I broke it the spring the Duchess of Vell sent me the Ashen Range, asking for something that looked like the edge of a kingdom. I had been up the western passes twice. I had never seen the north face, where the forests began and the clouds stopped.

So I drew it from my notes and from the stories of charcoal burners who came down the valley road with black hands. Each rock got its own facet, cut as sharp as a struck flint, because the burners swore the stone there split like glass. I hatched the shadows in dense parallel lines and left white patches for the snow, the way my master taught me, so the paper could breathe.

The pines took the longest. I gave the lower slopes seventeen rows of them, each a little darker than the last, until the forest looked like a held breath. In the corner, where the sky should have been, I drew two small clouds and a single gull I could not account for.

The Duchess sent the map back a week later with one line in green ink asking where the village was. I looked and found it tucked into the hatching of the valley floor, a row of roofs no bigger than a fingernail. I had drawn it without meaning to, and nobody in Caddenmoor has ever managed to rub it out.
