Lion and blossom sleeve on the arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic lion's head with a full mane fills the centre of the sleeve, with whiskers and shaded eyes rendered in fine detail. A clawed paw sits lower on the forearm, and cream blossoms and a pale ribbon-like band spiral around the arm between the lion and the paw. The tattoo is shown in black and grey shading with soft tonal gradients, photographed against a dark background.

Hannah Orme had carried the lodge banner up Ashdown Hill for three winters before anyone asked why the lion on it looked so tired. The painter at the Institute had given him a mane like a bonfire gone to ash and eyes that followed you down the chapel aisle. Each Whit Sunday the men marched behind him with a cream silk ribbon knotted to the pole and cherry blossom from the chapel tree wired along the top.

The trouble began in the dry spring after the strike, when the banner came down off its hooks for mending. Old Tom Pryce swore the lion had been copied from a circus poster in Cardiff, and that a caged beast forgets it was ever free. Hannah thought that was nonsense until she unrolled the canvas on her kitchen table and found the forepaw sewn on separately, stitched to the back with thread the colour of coal dust.
She unpicked it by lamplight. Tucked behind the paw was a folded scrap of lamp-room paper with a line in pencil: Bring him down when the cage gives. The handwriting belonged to nobody she knew, though the date was the morning the Bryn pit had flooded and twelve men had not come up.
Next morning she carried the paw down the hill and set it on the altar beside the blossom. The men filed in for the service, saw it, and stopped. Nobody spoke for a long time, and then Tom Pryce took off his cap and reached for the ribbon.
