Woman portrait, rose and revolver upper arm sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm and shows a woman's face partly framed by a helmet-style headpiece, with long hair flowing down beside it. Below her sits a large rose, with a revolver and a patterned fabric-like section and soft clouds of smoke filling the gaps. The shading is greyscale and highly detailed, with smooth gradients and strong contrast, set against a tank top and a studio wall of flash designs.

You have been the armourer's girl in Hesk for eleven winters, long enough to know which bells mean fire and which mean the king has been drinking again. The kingdom of Ambrel keeps no honest maps, only the smoke that lifts off the salt flats each evening from the foundries, and you have learned to read it the way fishermen read weather. Tonight the smoke is thin and grey, the colour of old pewter, which means the furnace master has gone home early and left the bellows cold.

Your bench sits under the window where the light falls clean. Gerrit left a helmet there before he rode north, a steel cap dented on one side where a crossbow bolt skidded off it. He wants the visor hinge oiled and the plume scraped before the garrison muster. Beside it lies the revolver he commissioned in spring, six chambers and a grip of walnut you carved yourself over long evenings. Nobody in Ambrel has seen a gun like it, and the king's men would hang you for the drawings alone.
Gerrit does not come for the helmet. He comes at dusk with a single rose from the palace wall, its petals bruised by frost, and sets it on the bench without a word. He says the northern garrison has been ordered to burn the marsh villages, and that he will not carry a sword into that. You look at the revolver, then at the rose, then out at the flats where the grey smoke keeps rising.
You load five chambers and leave the sixth empty, the way your mother banked the hearth so a fire would still be there in the morning. Then you polish the helmet until it throws back the lamp, and you press the rose between the pages of the muster roll, where the names of the dead will be written in ink the colour of smoke.
