Tiger and ferns on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large tiger faces forward on the outer thigh, rendered in soft grey shading with fine fur texture and striped markings. Dark fern fronds and foliage fill the lower part of the design and fade into a shadowed background behind the animal. The image is a close, angled photograph of the thigh with the rest of the body cropped out.

The abbot sends you up the ravine at first bell with a sack of salt and a rule you have memorised but never tested: stay out of the fern gully after vespers. You are fifteen summers into the vow and still count the steps down the path, forty-one of them, because counting keeps the mind from wandering into the green. Nobody at the monastery speaks of what lives below the ferns.

The first time you see her, the mist has not yet burned off the valley. She stands at the edge of the fronds as if she were part of the shadow, grey stripes laid over grey light, her head turned towards you with the patience of someone who has already decided you are no threat. You do not run. Brother Osric taught you that fear is only another kind of noise. You set the salt down on a flat stone and step back, and she lowers her great head to lick it.
Each morning after that you leave a little more salt, and each evening you climb back to the bell with fronds caught in your habit. The abbot notices the green on your sleeves and says nothing, which you have come to understand is his blessing. Once, when the bell for compline sounded and you stayed a moment too long, you heard her breathing close behind you, slow and warm, and you did not turn around.
The winter the snow closed the pass, the abbot climbed down to the gully himself. He found the salt untouched and two sets of prints in the frost, one of them yours, and beside them, pressed deep, the broad soft pads of something that had walked with you to the gate and then turned back into the trees. He studied the prints a long while, then went back up without a word, and in spring he sent you down with two sacks instead of one.
