Lion and lioness with crowns, pen sketch

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

Two lion heads are drawn in black pen on squared grid paper. The larger male lion has a full, shaded mane and a detailed crown above it, while the smaller lioness wears a more ornate, open crown. The linework uses hatching and dark shading for the fur, with no colour.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the stove's only so warm. You'll not have seen Pargeter's Travelling Menagerie, because it went under the winter the canal froze, but I was there, and my knees still remember it. There were two lions in that show. Mortimer was the big old dog with a mane like a wet hearthrug, and Bell was his mate, cleverer of the pair and well aware of it.

Arthur Pargeter had a pair of crowns made from tinplate and cardboard, painted gold at the kitchen table by his sister, so the lads in the back rows would pay a penny more to see royalty. Every night Mortimer wore his like a man who'd been told it was a joke and hadn't yet decided whether to laugh. Bell wore hers with her ears flat, watching the flap of the tent as if it owed her money.

When the bank came, the tent went to a scrap man from Doncaster and the lions had to go to a sanctuary up on the moors. The paperwork wanted a name and a weight for each, and Pargeter sat in the empty wagon writing the ledger with a hand gone shaky. Bell reached through the bars, took her crown in her teeth, and dragged it across the sawdust. She dropped it on the open page, right where the money was written down.

Mortimer never put his on again. Bell did, once a week, on the long walk up the hill, though nobody ever saw her do it. Now off to bed, and mind the stove on your way past.
