Lion and wolf head designs
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
Two animal head designs sit side by side on a plain white background. The lion on the left has soft, shaded fur with a full mane and detailed eyes, while the wolf on the right is drawn with fine hatched linework and sharp shading around the ears and muzzle. Both are rendered entirely in black and grey with no colour and no body placement shown.

You have been up since five, mixing lamp black with a drop of linseed on the lid of an old tin at the back of Pritchard's shed, because Nell Avery wants her father's boat repainted before the regatta and the two beasts on the transom done properly. The lion goes to port, the wolf to starboard, and she has given you a sketch on the back of a fish receipt that says only: soft for the lion, hard for the wolf. You tell her that is not how paint works. She tells you that is exactly how it works, you just haven't noticed yet.

The harbour wakes around you in gulls and diesel and the clatter of crates on the fish market. You start with the lion, feathering the mane with a worn sable, letting the black thin into grey until the face looks like it is sleeping with its eyes open. The wolf takes longer. You work it with a rigger brush, hatching in short strokes that run the way fur grows, one line at a time, and by noon your wrist aches and the ears seem to be listening for something across the water.
Nell comes down the slip with two mugs of stewed tea and stands a long while in front of the lion, then the wolf, then you. "They're the wrong way round," she says. You look. Her father always said the lion was for the land and the wolf was for the water, and you realise the boat has been facing the wrong way all along. You do not argue. You swap the stencils, so the wolf now stares out at the harbour mouth and the lion looks back toward the quay.
At dusk the varnish goes tacky under the lamp, and the two heads catch the last of the light as the hull knocks gently against the wall. Nell pays you in coins and a heel of bread wrapped in newspaper. On the harbour wall a dog barks once, and the wolf's eyes shine before the lion's do.
