Lion, cherry blossom and lotus on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A lion's head in profile is shaded in greys and black, with fine fur detail and a soft highlight on the muzzle. Pink cherry blossom branches curve down the left side of the lion, and a large pink lotus flower sits at the lower edge of the design. The lion and the flowers sit on a rounded upper arm against a dark top and a wooden surface.

You'll not believe what Mr Ashdown has done with the big cat wagon. Samson, the old lion, went grey about the muzzle last winter, and the morning after the Lincoln fair he sat up on his haunches and stared at the sky as if he was owed an apology. Ashdown says it's a bad omen. I say it's just a lion being old and cross, which is the best kind of company.
The real news is Ada from the coconut shy. She got hold of a tin of pink enamel off the Blackpool lot and has been painting blossom branches on every cart panel that will sit still. She says the lotus is for the mirror stall, though nobody on this lot has ever seen a lotus in a Norfolk field. She painted one anyway, on the side of the strongman's trunk, big as a dinner plate, and it looked so real that a child tried to pick it off.
Last Thursday, in the rain, Samson walked the length of the lot with his mane brushing against the painted branches and stopped dead at that lotus. Just stood there with his head low and the water running off his ears. Ada cried, then swore blind she hadn't.
I don't know what it means. Maybe nothing. But if you come to the Easter fair at Wells, come early and bring the good coat. I want you to see him in front of those flowers, the way the light lands on his face.
Love, Bet
