Realism lion head tattoo with a flowing mane and blue flowers across the upper arm and shoulder.

Lion portrait with blue flowers on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A grey-shaded lion head with a flowing mane covers the upper arm and extends over the shoulder, with pinkish-red tones in the mane. Small blue flowers are scattered through the mane and along the top edge of the design. Soft shading and fine detail give the lion a realistic, three-dimensional look against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lion came down from the quarry road the week the blue flowers came out in Hollin Bottom, and nobody could say afterwards who had left the gate open. Mrs Abernethy swore she had shut it with the bolt. Her son swore the petals were already caught in the fur when the animal stepped into the square, drifting off him like late snow that would not settle.

He did not hurt anyone. He lay down beside the well outside the Co-op and put his great grey head on his forepaws, and the men who had come out with the rifles from the Legion hut stood on the church steps and argued about it. Edna Pask, who had baked bread in the same ovens for forty years, walked down with a enamel bowl of water and set it in front of him. He drank it all, then breathed out slowly, and the petals fell from his mane onto the cobbles. Where they landed, the children said, small green shoots pushed up through the wet stone before anyone could stop them.

The constable wanted him moved on to the moors by nightfall. Edna told him the old people in the town knew what the lion was, if he had only asked them. In her grandmother's time, after the drought had cracked every field, a lion had walked down the same road carrying seed in the thick of his mane, and he had shaken it out over the parched hillsides until the streams ran again.

By morning he had gone back up the quarry road. The well was full of blue petals, the bowl sat empty on Edna's step, and a line of paw prints led out of the square through a bed of new flowers that nobody had planted.
