Lion and lamb on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic lion's head with a full mane fills the upper arm, with the eyes, nose and whiskers rendered in fine shading. A smaller lamb sits below the lion, partly blending into the mane. The piece uses only black ink and grey shading, with soft gradients across the fur and a dark background behind the subjects.

The shelf above the slicer holds the tins for the Easter lambs, six of them, dented at the ears. Tonight he took down the biggest and rubbed it with his thumb, slowly, the way my nan used to polish her brass. I asked whose it was. He said his father's, and before that a man in Leeds who never once let a customer see inside his oven.
By half five the windows had turned grey. On the cooling rack sat the lion he'd shaped for the front display, a mane of scored crust, eyes made of two raisins. He had tucked a little lamb beneath it, into the fur, because, he said, a lion only looks fierce from the front. Turn it round and you have a lamb standing in a lion's shadow.
I asked if the lion would eat the lamb. He laughed so hard he had to sit down on the flour sack. Then he wiped his hands, slid the tray into the oven and said, "Not in my shop. Not before the sun is up." The glass door glowed gold, and for a moment the whole back room looked like a small sunrise.
