Lion cub above Remember Who you are script
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A cartoon lion cub is drawn in bold black outline, lying with its head raised and its tail curling up at the right. Soft grey shading sits inside the body and a small reddish-brown tone appears on the head. Below the cub, the words Remember Who you are are written in flowing black script, and the whole design sits on bare skin in a close crop.

The tent came down on a wet Tuesday in Ashby. Mr Pell swore it was bad luck, though we'd been living on bad luck since spring. I was nineteen, holding the cub's basket on my knees in the lorry cab while the canvas slid past the window in grey folds.

Kip was eleven weeks old and already knew his trick. He climbed the painted drum, lay down with his head up and his tail curled over his back, and waited for the brass to stop. Pell had a buyer lined up at a zoo in Wales, a man with a clipboard and a van that smelled of disinfectant. Pell didn't look at the cub when he talked about it. He looked at the ledger.
Nan's saying was painted on the caravan door in red letters that had mostly flaked away: Remember who you are. She'd meant the family and the horses and the old road. I never knew what it meant for a cub. On the last morning I carried Kip out past the gorse on Hadley Common, set the basket down and lifted the lid. He stared at me as if I'd made a mistake, then padded off through the wet grass and vanished into the yellow.
My heart went like a drum. Then he came back, pushed out of the bracken, and climbed onto a flat stone. He lay down with his head raised and his tail curling up, exactly the pose he'd learned for strangers, except now there was no brass and nobody to please. He held it a long time. When he finally got up he didn't look back at the lorry. I did. Pell stood at the gate with the ledger under his arm, and for once he didn't call my name.
