Mountain range with quote on shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the phrase Not all who wander are lost in cursive script, with a range of mountain peaks rising beneath and across the lettering. The linework is fine and the mountains are filled with dark ink and soft teal-grey tones. The design sits across the upper back and shoulder blade, photographed close up against a dark background.

Dear Nan,

The book at the Co-op has your name against my tab still, so I expect you'll hear before the week is out that I've gone up the valley instead of down the shaft. Mr Pryce says a man who walks off the hill with no wage is a fool, and he may be right, but those mountains have been looking at me through the kitchen window since I was nine, and I can't pretend otherwise any longer.
I found Dad's old map in the tin under the stairs, the one with the seams pencilled in red. On the back he'd written a line in his square capitals, which I took for a hymn sheet joke until I saw the rest of it: NOT ALL WHO WANDER ARE LOST. He never once went past the Hafod gates in forty years, so I suppose it was a wish rather than a boast.
Yesterday I reached the col below the black crag. Snow still lay in the gullies, and the peaks rose up like the teeth of a saw, grey-blue against a sky the colour of wet slate. I sat on a rock and ate the bread you wrapped in newspaper, and I did not feel lost at all. I felt like a man who had finally turned to the right page.
Tell Mam I'm eating. Tell Gwyn the ferret is his now. I'll write from Bala if the post still goes there.
Love, Owen
