Lion dog and phoenix on a lower leg
Japanese · Calf · Colour · Photo
A purple lion dog with green eyes and an open mouth sits near the bottom of the design, with a golden wheel below it. Above it, a red, orange and blue phoenix with feathered wings is set against swirling cloud shapes and pink cherry blossom. The bold outlines and saturated colour fill a dark background, and the design wraps around the leg.

The dogs at the gate of Hoshiyama shrine had sat in the rain for two hundred years, and every spring Tomi scraped the moss from their brows with a bamboo spatula while her father coughed in the workshop behind her. The left one kept its mouth open, breathing out whatever evil came up the stone steps. The right one kept its mouth shut, holding the breath in. Her father said that was the whole art of guardianship, knowing when to let a thing out.

The autumn the mill burned, the sky over the valley turned the colour of a persimmon for three nights, and on the third morning a bird came down out of the smoke with its wings held wide. It was not a crane or a kite. Its tail spilled like ribbons of fire and blue silk, and it landed on the wall beside the open-mouthed dog. The dog, which had never once closed its jaw, looked up. Tomi swore afterwards that its green eyes had gone bright as jade.
Nobody in the village had seen a phoenix, so nobody agreed on what it meant. The priest said it was a sign of rebirth. Her father, who had carved stone for fifty years, said only that the bird had wanted the lion to stop being so tired. He took the brass wheel from the cart that had carried the ash away, polished it with his sleeve, and set it between the dog's paws as a weight. Then he handed Tomi the chisel.
She spent that summer cutting cherry blossom into the cloud-curls around the stone's ankles, petal by petal, until the grey granite looked almost pink in the evening light. When the blossom fell, it drifted onto the steps and nobody swept it up. The gate kept its guardians, the old dog kept breathing out, and the bird kept watch from the tiles above.
