Lion family portrait on the shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an adult male lion with a full mane centred at the top, with a lioness on the right and two lion cubs at the lower left and lower centre. The fur and faces are rendered in soft, layered greyscale shading with fine whisker lines and detailed eyes. The animals overlap in a tight cluster that fills the curve of the shoulder, with the darkest tones around the mane and the muzzles.

Dear Nell, the lions have got into the back parlour again, and Mrs Hollis has stopped pretending she can do anything about it. Mr Tanner brought them up from the yard on Tuesday with a rope on each of them and a sack of straw, and they have made a den of the good armchairs. Caesar, the old man, sleeps across the hearthrug like a dropped coat, and his mane spills over the fender so the whole room smells of him, warm and dusty, like a stable on a summer afternoon.

Juno, his lioness, will not be moved from the window seat. She sits with her chin on the sill watching the grey sea come in over the groynes, and when the gulls land on the wall she gives a single flick of her ear, as if she is keeping a tally. The cubs, Pip and little Smudge, are a different matter. They have had the lace curtains down twice and chewed the corner off the Bible on the hall table. Mrs Hollis says she will have them out by Easter. She said the same about the lions.
Last night Juno came off the sill and lay down beside Caesar, and the two cubs crept in between them as though they had been sent for. Smudge fell asleep with his cheek pressed against his father's muzzle, and I stood in the doorway with the lamp, not wanting to be the one who woke them. I think the show will sail for Hull in the spring without them. I think I will miss the smell of straw more than I expected.
Write back soon, and tell me the rent at the Crescent is still robbery.
Love, Ada
