A large portrait of a lion's head with a detailed mane and amber eyes sits at the top of the design, with a lioness and two lion cubs in a grassy scene below. The shading is soft and smooth, with fine fur detail and blended tones across the faces and manes. Warm browns, golds and oranges dominate, with blue and dark tones in the night sky at the top right.

By the third night of the cold snap the generator at Hollin Brook Wildlife Park had started coughing again, and Dilys Ferrand gave up pretending she could sleep through it. She pulled her coat over her pyjamas, took the torch from its hook by the back door, and walked the frozen gravel to the big cats' house with her breath going up ahead of her like smoke from a fire nobody had lit.

The old lion, Brannock, was already at the wire. He stood with his great head turned away from the sheds, looking over the hedge towards the stars, which were so sharp that night they looked like frost on glass. Behind him, in the straw of the den box, the two cubs were a heap of tawny fur. Pip and Juno had been born in October, and they had grown bold enough to bite the keepers' boots. Now they slept with their paws tucked under them like kittens. Dilys found the heater's fuse by feel, blew on her fingers, and swore softly when the wire slipped and bit her thumb.
When the light came back on, the warmth spread through the house with a tick and a rumble. Brannock didn't move to the heater. Instead he padded to the den, turned once, and lay down across the doorway, his back to the cold draught and his flank against the cubs. Dilys had expected him to be a fierce old thing with nothing left to guard, but he settled like a man who had decided the night was his to keep.
She sat on an upturned bucket with the torch switched off and let the generator hum. Through the mesh she could see the stars wheeling slowly over the hedgerow. She didn't go back to bed. She stayed until the sky greyed over the car park, and Brannock, without once looking round, kept watch with her.
