Realistic lion family tattoo on the side
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a maned adult male lion on the left, with a lioness and a young cub on the right, the cub pressed against the lioness's side. The fur is rendered with fine stippled and feathered strokes, with soft tonal shading in tans, browns and greys, and the lions' eyes are picked out in pale blue. The figures fill the frame with the male's mane fading into the background at the top, and the design sits on smooth skin with a slight curve.

The menagerie ship came in on the top of the tide, its hold smelling of hay and tar, and by the time the gangplank went down the whole of Saltcombe was lining the quay to see the lions. Nobody had warned us there would be a lioness with them, or that the old male would be led off first, head high, as if he had paid for the crossing himself.

My brother Tam was nine and fearless in the way only nine-year-olds are. He slipped under the rope while the keeper was counting crates, and I went after him because Mam had told me to mind him. We found them in the lee of the net loft: the tawny old male with his mane gone the colour of wet sand, the lioness pressed against his shoulder, and between them a cub no bigger than our spaniel, its ears still too large for its head.
Nobody spoke. The keeper came round the corner with his pole and stopped dead. The lioness looked at Tam, then at me, and then she lowered her head and nudged the cub back towards the dark of the loft, the way a sensible mother moves a child away from the road. The old male didn't move at all. His pale blue eyes just rested on me, steady as the lamp at the harbour mouth.
They sailed on the evening tide with the cub still aboard, though the keeper swore he would have to come back for them in spring. Tam still keeps a tuft of mane he pulled from the rope as proof. I think of that old male whenever the tide turns in Saltcombe, the way he stood between his family and the open quay, unhurried, as if guarding a door nobody had asked him to guard.
