Lion, gorilla and tiger black and grey sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Three side-by-side panels of a black and grey sleeve tattoo show a lion's head at the top left, a roaring gorilla with bandaged figures beneath it in the centre, and a tiger's head with a pagoda roof and wall at the right. Fine shading and detailed fur, hair and skin texture run across all three panels, with a cross and rose lower on the left. The image is a close, evenly lit photograph of the sleeve on skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper of the Ashby Fair menagerie had three beasts and one rule, which was that they must never see one another through the bars. Every evening he dragged sailcloth over the wagons, and every evening the gorilla, Solomon, worked one knuckle into the canvas until a seam gave and the lion, Augustus, could look out across the grass at the tiger, Mei, pacing her cage beside the painted pagoda.

The bandaged players arrived in the third week of September, a troupe that walked up from the coast with their faces wrapped in linen and their hands raised as if the wind might knock them over. They pitched beside the big top and performed without a word, and Solomon, who had never seen a face that was neither his own nor the keeper's, sat down in the mud before them and did not roar once all afternoon.

On the last night the keeper found the cloth folded neatly on the wagon steps, and Augustus had climbed onto the roof to watch the clouds slide over the Ferris wheel. The keeper said nothing about it. He went to the churchyard instead, where he had left a rose and a small iron cross on his wife's grave, and he sat there until the light came up grey.

When he came back at dawn the three beasts stood still in their pens, facing three ways, and the linen players were gone without a trace, leaving only the knots of their wrappings caught on the fence like pale flowers.
