Realistic lion head tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A lion's head in profile faces right, with its eye, nose, mouth and whiskers rendered in fine detail. The mane is shaded in layered, feathered strokes that fade into the background at the top and left. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey, with soft gradients for depth and bright highlights on the muzzle and whiskers.

You take the night watch at Porthennick because nobody else will, and because the harbour book says the lion must be checked before the spring tide. The lion is a granite head set into the sea wall above the slipway, its mane worn smooth by a century of gloved hands, its face turned out past the breakwater as if it has spotted something moving in the dark water.

Your predecessor, Aggie Trethowan, left a tin of lamp oil and a note pinned under the kettle: Don't let the boys climb him. Tell him the pilchards are in. You don't tell him anything. You sit on an upturned crab pot with a flask of stewed tea and watch the harbour mouth, where the fog comes in low and slow, swallowing the mast lights one at a time.
Around two the fog thickens and an engine labours somewhere beyond the wall, misfiring, coughing, going quiet. A voice calls a name that isn't yours. You swing the torch onto the stone, and the beam finds the whiskers the masons cut so fine they look wet, and for a moment the great head seems to lean forward into the light, the way Aggie said it did when the weather was turning.
The boat noses in on the swell with its lamp out, two men bent over the tiller. You take the rope they throw and haul until the bow kisses the slipway. When the fog finally lifts off the water, it lifts exactly where the lion has been staring all night, and you lay your palm against the cold muzzle as the tide begins to turn.
