Roaring lion with walking lion on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large roaring lion head with bared fangs and a detailed mane fills the upper part of the forearm, with a second lion shown walking away from the viewer beneath it. The work uses fine, detailed shading in black and grey, with strong contrast in the mane and around the eyes and muzzle. The background is dark, and a white shirt sleeve is visible at the right edge of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The lion went up the ramp of the goods wagon at Carlisle on Tuesday, and I have not stopped hearing him since. Mr Haskins had the cage door propped with a broom handle and a bucket of cold tea, and the whole platform was waiting for the roar. He did not roar. He turned his great head once, looked at the porters as if they owed him money, and then he walked up into the dark of the van as though he were the one who had bought the ticket.

The circus people were less calm. Bessie from the trapeze had cried into her hat, and the ringmaster kept shouting figures about insurance at the signalman, who only nodded and went on with his flag. I stood by the water tower with the parcel for the Penrith train and thought, that cat has more dignity than the lot of us.

Then the wagon door slid shut and the whole van rocked, and out through the slats came that roar, long and terrible, rolling down the length of the platform until the pigeons lifted off the awnings. Everybody flinched. Haskins laughed, wiped his eyes with his cuff, and said the lion was only letting the station know who was in charge.

Mr Haskins says they will be back through Carlisle in March, so I may go and look at him properly, from the far side of the rails where he cannot reach me. Write back soon, and tell Mother I have not been eating the sweets from the buffet.

Love, Ada
