Lion head with floral mandala on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A lion's head is shown in profile-facing view, with its left half rendered in soft realistic shading and mane texture. The right half is filled with ornate floral and mandala linework, dotted detail and small flowers that replace the fur. The tattoo is in black and grey ink on smooth skin, with the composition centred on the leg.

Dear Tomas,

The Brenda Ann came in on Tuesday with her nets torn to ribbons and your name still on the stern board where Dad painted it. I took the lion off the wheelhouse door before the surveyor could see the crack. Half of him was still Dad's work, the mane done with a sable brush, all ginger and wet. The other half had gone chalky, so I scraped it back and started again on the eye, and then I could not stop. You know how I am with a bit of knotwork.

I filled the blank side with the loops I use on the mending needle, twists and rosettes, little sea pinks where the fur should have been. Mrs Oddie from the chandlery says it looks like a church window. Gordon says it looks like a doily. I told him a lion can be both things if it has been out in weather long enough.

The boat goes out again Monday on the morning tide, short two men and one winch. Gordon asked me to tell you the skipper is not a monster, only tired. I would rather tell you the door is hung straight now and the lion looks down over the slipway, one side fierce, one side dressed for Sunday. Every morning I stand at the rail and count the lights coming round the headland.

When you come home I will show you which half is mine.

Love, Ellen
