Lion head with pink flowers on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A lion's head with a full mane is tattooed on the outer thigh, surrounded by pink and red blossoms and a small butterfly at the top. The lion is rendered in black and grey shading with bold outlines, while the flowers use solid pink and red fills with green leaves. The design fills the frame and wraps around the thigh, with the lion's face centred and the flowers spreading outward to the edges.

Dear Marjorie,

Don't pretend you've forgotten the lion. The Easter fête in 1984, the cardboard lion from Mr Pryce's woodwork room, and you pinning paper blossoms all the way round its mane with a bent hairgrip because the glue had given up. Half of Form Four still thinks it was a hearthrug.

The reunion committee wants the hall dressed for the sixtieth, and when they cleared the caretaker's shed for the new kitchen, there it was under a tarpaulin. The mane had gone grey with damp and the paper roses still clung to it, pink and rust. Nobody could say who had kept it all these years. Mrs Okafor, who runs the office now, says she'd have sent it to the skip if the flowers hadn't caught her eye.

I stood in that shed on Tuesday and did a daft thing. I climbed the stepladder and tucked a paper butterfly back where it had worked loose at the top, the one you cut from a Quality Street wrapper. It took me four minutes and two strips of Sellotape. My knees have not forgiven me.

I'm not asking you to come. I'm asking whether you still have that hairgrip. Bring it on Saturday and we'll fix the lion together, and if you won't, I'll wedge one behind my ear and walk in as though I was the brave one that year. Love, Pat.
