Elephant with peacock feathers on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed elephant head sits at the centre of the design, wearing a mandala-style ornament and a beaded garland that hangs from its trunk. Peacock feathers and hibiscus flowers rise above and beside the head, with a mandala pattern filling the ear area. The work is built from fine lines and stippled dots in black ink and grey shading, and the design runs vertically along the outer thigh.

The trunk came off the 14:10 from Carlisle with its lid tied shut by a bootlace, and nobody had claimed it in three weeks. I cut the lace with the scissors from the drawer and folded back the canvas. Inside were peacock feathers wrapped in tissue, a length of hibiscus-print silk gone the colour of weak tea, and a brass disc the size of a saucer, stamped with a ring of dots. A luggage tag read Bessie, Mind the Feathers, in careful capitals.

Ruth came in on the Thursday with a grey plait down her back and hay on her boots. She didn't ask for a receipt. She lifted out the string of wooden beads, let them run through her fingers, and they made a dry clicking like rain starting on a tin roof. The fair had folded in March, she said. Bessie had gone to a farm near Brampton where the paddock backed onto the railway, and the trains were the only thing that ever made her lift her head.

I asked whether she wanted the feathers back in the trunk. She shook her head and pressed the beads into my palm. Take them to the next platform, she said, and tell the man on the bench they're for the elephant. He won't understand, but the beads will know what to do.

I hung the garland on the hook by the window of the office. Every time a train pulls into Platform Two, the beads knock softly against the glass, and I find I am listening for them.
