Lion head with swirling mane on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A lion's head is shown in shaded, realistic detail, with its eyes and muzzle rendered in soft greys. The mane around it is drawn as stylised, looping swirls of fine black linework that fill the rest of the design. The tattoo is photographed in close crop on the outer thigh, with a white crocheted top and denim shorts at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The stone lion on the chapel gate had lost its nose to frost the winter the cage jammed at Crake Pit, and nobody in the Hollow thought to ask it for anything. Mam Hesketh went up the hill anyway, with a tin of lamp oil under one arm and a hip that had never forgiven her, and she knelt in the wet grass until her knees gave out.

The lion's mane had been cut in the old way, looping like beck water over the stone, every curl worn smooth by a hundred years of rain. She rubbed the oil into the swirls because her mother had done the same, and while her hands moved she told it about Tom Ridley, who had gone down with the morning shift and whose whistle she could still hear in her sleep. She told it plainly, the way you tell a thing you have stopped expecting to be heard.
The next morning the lion's head had turned a little on its neck, though the mason swore it had not. Its carved eyes looked down the hill toward the east drift, the one the men had called dead ground. Mam Hesketh sent her grandsons with picks and a lantern, and they tapped the wall where the eyes pointed until a voice came knocking back. Tom Ridley came out at dusk, grey with dust, and the lion watched him walk down the hill without saying anything at all.
The mane still shows soot in the cracks of its curls. Each spring the women of the Hollow mix lamp black with oil and draw those same looping lines on their own skin, and nobody needs to be told why.
