Sunflowers and daisies across the outer thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large floral design of sunflowers, daisy-like blooms, small buds and leaves covers the outer thigh and hip. The linework is fine and detailed, with stippled dotwork and soft grey shading giving the petals and seed heads depth. The flowers are arranged in a dense, diagonal cluster that sweeps from the hip down towards the knee.

Old Maud at the lock-house always said the sunflowers on the east bank were people who had given up waiting for morning. Each summer they stood with their heads bowed and their faces lifted to the first light, and nobody dug them out, because a bloom pulled from that soil would cry all night in the voice of whoever had planted it.

The spring Tamsin came back from the salt towns, she walked straight past the house with her basket of seed and went down to the east bank. She carried only one black seed in her palm, because she had promised her mother she would plant just the one. Her mother had gone east years before to find work and had sent no word since, and Tamsin had decided that a flower could be a letter if you were patient enough to read it.
She knelt and pressed the seed into the wet clay. The river kept moving and the ground stayed quiet. She waited through the afternoon and the long night, telling herself the stories were only stories, the way her mother used to say. At first light the seedling had broken through, and already it was leaning, a green stem bending east toward the grey line over the hills.
Tamsin did not dig it up. She sat beside it with her back against the lock gate and watched the sun climb, and when the head finally opened, wide and gold as a cartwheel, it turned slowly until it faced her. "Well," she said to it, "I'm here now." The flower, as if it had heard, held still.
