Lion in helmet and sunglasses on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A lion's head wears a military-style helmet marked with a peace symbol, aviator sunglasses with reflective lenses, and a striped scarf at the neck. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast in the helmet and lenses and soft greys across the fur. The design fills the frame on the upper arm, with a dark background at the top and sides.

Brother Tobias had been warned the lion would be a problem, but the abbot had never said which kind. The beast arrived at the gate of Saint Ruan's on a wet Tuesday, wearing a tin helmet with a peace sign that had mostly flaked away, and aviator sunglasses bent back into shape with pliers. It held an unlit cigarette in its teeth the way other men hold a grudge.

"I was in the army," it said, in a voice like a cellar door. "Two tours. Then I came here to be quiet." Tobias, who had been quiet for nineteen years, felt an odd kinship. He showed the lion to the guest cell, where it sat on the bed and stared at the wall through vespers. Each morning it walked the cloister with its striped scarf knotted loosely at the throat, stopping at the thyme beds to sniff and sneeze.

The trouble came in autumn, when the abbot's cousin arrived from the valley with a crate of wine and a pamphlet about the new conscription. He read it aloud at supper. The lion rose from the flagstones, took the cigarette from its mouth, and said only, "Sit down, Father." Nobody argued. The cousin sat.

Years later, when Tobias was old and the lion was grey at the muzzle, they sat on the wall above the valley together. The lion had taken its sunglasses off for once, and its eyes were tired and kind. "Peace is a helmet too," it said. "You wear it so they know you mean it." Tobias laughed until he coughed, and the lion, pleased, finally lit its cigarette.
