Smoking piston character on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A piston with a scowling face, clenched teeth and a lit cigar, with its connecting rod hanging below and wisps of smoke rising above. The linework is bold and the head is shaded with smooth grey gradients. Apart from the small orange-red cigar tip, the tattoo is in black and grey, set against a plain light skin background.

Nobody at Pennick's Travelling Fair could say when the engine man had started smoking, only that he had never once taken the cigar from his teeth to speak. Mags Tolliver found him at midnight behind the dodgems, his iron head tipped back against the steam gallopers' boiler, a grey plume rising from him into the cold air like a question nobody wanted to answer.

The showman had sold the old engine to a scrap man from Hull, and the scrap man had sent word that Monday would be its last turn. 'Once more,' said Mags, and the engine man looked at her with eyes like rivets and told her the rod was bent, the crank was seized, and he had been dead since the winter the Harvest Queen went through the ice on Clough Lake. But he got up anyway. The connecting rod came down off the flywheel with a sound like a church door, the brass horses lurched on their poles, and the organ wheezed into 'Danny Boy' as if it had been waiting all year to play it.
They rode until the lamps guttered. The engine man kept his cigar lit with one orange glow that never burned down, and nobody who was on the carousel that night ever spoke of how the seats stopped rising and falling, only that the wind smelled of tobacco and hot oil. When the scrap lorry came up the lane at dawn, the field was bare except for a single piston lying in the wet grass, still warm, with a thread of smoke climbing from it towards the sky.
