Ndlovu had walked the red road for three days when the lion stepped out from behind a dead acacia and sat down in front of him. He did not run. A man who runs in the Kalahari dies with the dogs. He set down the tin box he carried and waited, and the lion waited too, its mane full of sand, until the sun was a hand's width above the ridge.

'What is in the box?' the lion asked. 'Earth from my mother's yard,' said Ndlovu. 'She told me to take it to the river and let it go.' The lion looked at the lid, then at the man's dusty shoes. 'Earth does not need carrying. It knows the way. It is you who has forgotten.' Then he pressed one paw into the sand and drew a circle. Inside it the ground ran from red to orange to yellow to green, the way colours run when the first rain hits old clay. 'This is the land,' said the lion. 'You have been walking away from its edge for years, and it has been waiting for you to turn round.'
Ndlovu opened the tin. Inside lay three twists of paper, each holding a different soil: red from the north, yellow from the sands, green from the reeds near the river. He knelt and poured them into the circle, and the wind lifted the colours and mixed them. When the lion stood up, his mane had gone the colour of old straw, with pale lines through it like the course of rivers on a map.
They walked south together until the sand gave way to grass. At the edge of the reeds the lion stopped. 'Here is the mouth of the road,' he said, and Ndlovu understood he was being told to go on alone. Behind him the lion's roar rolled across the flats. The man did not look back, because the land was in front of him, and it was green.
