Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large realistic lion head with a full mane faces forward, with a smaller lamb's head placed beneath it on the same panel. Dear Owen, the lamb came down off the top field on Tuesday with its back leg bent wrong, and I have been sitting up with it in the washhouse since, the lamp turned low so the smoke does not get in its eyes. You will laugh, but I told the vicar's boy to keep his dog in, because there is a lion in Ashcombe Wood again. Walter Pike saw it at dusk by the stile, a great head above the bracken and a mane like a burnt haystack, and he said it looked at him the way the old ram looks at a gate it intends to go through.

I did not believe him until Thursday. I went out with the bucket before light and the frost was still on the gate, and there it was, sitting in the lane as easy as a cat on a step. It did not rise. It looked at me, then past me at the pen, and I swear it sighed. The lamb was bleating fit to wake the dead, and the lion turned its head toward the sound and kept it there, patient, the way you watch a child who has fallen asleep in the cart.

I have thought about it all week. Your grandfather always said the wood keeps its own bargains. Perhaps the lion has been keeping the foxes off the lambing ground all these years and we never once thanked it. I left the washhouse door open on Friday, and in the morning the lamb was standing, and the paw prints came right up to the gate and stopped. Come home at Easter and bring your sister. I will show you where it sat.
