Lips and skull stencil design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a solid black stencil or flash design on a white background. A lip shape forms the outer silhouette, with a white cut-out line across the middle and a skull-like face with eye sockets and teeth picked out in the negative space. The design is flat black with no shading or grey tones, so it reads as a bold, simple outline for transfer.

The lamp behind the kissing booth had to be switched off before the skull showed through, and Ada had learned that the hard way the summer she was nine. Now she stood on an upturned crate with a tin of black gloss and a brush cut to a point, trying to follow her uncle's outline along the top lip. Around her the fair was coming down. A generator coughed somewhere past the dodgems, and the carousel gave one last bored tune before going quiet.

Uncle Teddy had painted the sign every spring in the same hand, a pair of lips so full and red that the lads queued from the Waltzer just to be photographed beside them. He never explained the skull. He said the teeth were only there to keep the line honest, because a kiss on the road always had a bite in it. Ada had taken that for one of his jokes until she found his ledger in the caravan, every name he had ever been asked to mark, each with a small cross beside it and no date.

She worked the gloss into the hollow of the cheek, where the bones came through the paint, and felt a little foolish talking to a sign. Still, she told it the ledger was at the bottom of the trunk, and that she had not yet decided whether to burn it. The white cut of the mouth ran straight as a rule across the middle, the way Teddy always left it, and the sockets stayed open and empty.

When the last tooth was finished she climbed down, flicked the switch, and the lamp came on behind the canvas. The skull lit up in its lips, grinning at the empty field. Ada left the brush rinsing in the bucket and did not look back at it.
