Tribal-style sitting cat design
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black silhouette of a cat seated upright, with its head turned and its tail curling along the bottom edge. The cat is built from thick, flowing black shapes divided by white swirling lines, giving a tribal-inspired look. The design is in solid black on a white background with no shading or colour.

Marta had been told the keep was empty, which was why the sheep grazed its inner ward. She climbed the broken stair at dusk with a lantern that smelled of paraffin, counting the steps the way her grandfather had taught her, and found the cat sitting on the lintel of the chapel door as though it had been waiting for the bell to ring.

It was black as the hole in the wall behind it, its outline cut from the dark so that only thin white channels showed where the light got in. Its head was turned over one shoulder, looking back at her rather than forward into the nave. Its tail ran along the flagstones and curled at the end into a sharp white tip. Marta had come for the bronze bell rope, which a dealer in Carlisle would pay well for, but the cat did not move for her lantern.
She tried reasoning with it. She told it about the rain coming off the fells and the lorry waiting at the gate. The cat yawned slowly, the way a door opens on a cold hinge, and she noticed the swirls along its flank were not only decoration. They ran like the lead flashing on the roof, carrying water from the stone into the gutters. Someone long dead had built the chapel to keep the weather off its floor, and had given the job to a cat.
She left the rope where it hung and drove home without it. The next morning she came back to find the sheep lying in a ring around the chapel, dry and unbothered, and the rope coiled neatly on the step. On the wet flagstones by the door was a patch of dry stone the exact shape of a sitting cat, with its tail curled at the end.
