You will think me foolish, but I could not find the words Father would have approved of, so I put my mouth to the page instead. I pressed it with the rouge you bought me at Carlisle fair, the one called Cardinal that cost you a week's wages. The print came out darker than I meant, and blurred at the edges where I lifted away too quickly.

There is a white line running through the middle of it, straight as a ruled margin. I did not mean to leave it, but I hesitated just as I was finishing, and the paper kept a little of the gap where my courage ran out. I have been looking at it all afternoon, deciding whether it is a flaw or the honest part.
