Yesterday I found your blue twine in the potting shed and spent an hour tying the runners back to the trellis before I understood I was doing exactly what Mum did every March, and that none of us ever thanked her for it.

Do you remember the plum tree? Dad carved the word love into its bark the summer you turned nine, a loop of knife-cuts that ran round and round until it crossed itself through the middle. He said a line that doubles back on itself is the only kind that holds. You called it a mistake. I called it a knot. Neither of us was right, because the tree kept growing and the wound closed over the cuts year after year, until the letters sat tucked inside the swelling like something the tree had decided to keep safe.
The plum came down in February, the week after the hard frost. The man from the council cut it into rounds for firewood and left a heap by the bins. I went out with my tea and found the one with the loop on it, the wood gone pale and the word still readable in the middle, Dad's careful capitals gone soft at the edges. I stood there longer than I meant to.
I've wrapped that slice in the Gazette and posted it to you, so you'll have something of it. Come home for the apples in October. Bring the good secateurs. We'll leave the bindweed where it is.
