Three connected hearts in fine line

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large heart outline sits above two smaller hearts, each joined by a thin, tapering line that trails down from the main heart. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with no shading or colour, and the tattoo is centred on pale, slightly flushed skin. The composition is simple and open, with the smaller hearts placed to the lower left and lower right of the central heart.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The string had gone slack again by the time Nell reached the gate, so she knotted it twice around the iron hoop and tugged until the three paper hearts swung clear of the privet. Her grandmother had cut them from the back of a seed catalogue that spring, one large and two small, and pinned them to the sweet pea canes so the bees would find the lane easier. Nobody had told the wind about the plan.

Maud had always said the garden was a conversation with the weather, and most of the talking was done by her. Nell had come to clear the bed by the shed, where the runner beans had gone to seed in a tangle of brown tendrils. She pulled them free one by one, feeling for the thin wire of each stem, and found the stubborn one at the back that had wound itself around the watering can handle as if it intended to stay.

The big heart lifted off the cane and dipped, and the smaller ones followed like dogs on leads. Nell caught the central string in her fist and felt the tug travel up her arm into her shoulder. She thought of the envelope in the kitchen drawer, addressed in Maud's looping hand: For Nell, when the sweet peas are out. It was only June. The first blooms were already opening along the fence, pale mauve and ruffled, exactly where her grandmother had planted them.

She tied the hearts to the gate, one knot at a time, and left the envelope unopened on the windowsill. Some things took their own time to show themselves, Maud would have said, and then she would have gone back to the beans. Nell did the same. The hearts turned in the breeze, tapering down towards the lane like a line of ink that had not yet dried.
