Looping ribbon and script love on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black tattoo of a looping ribbon-like design, with a smaller loop nested inside a larger one, sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The word love is written in a flowing script that overlaps the lower curve of the loops. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour, shown in a close, evenly lit photo.

Dear Pip, the ovens were lit at four and I have been up since before the milk van, so forgive the smudges on this page. Your mum asked me to write, and I am doing it the old way, with flour still on my knuckles.

Mr Okafor from the corner shop wanted a loaf for his wife's birthday, nothing fancy, but he asked for a ribbon round the box. I had the spool of red satin and tied it the way Dad taught us, two loops and a pull, then a third loop tucked back through the first so it would not slip. He watched my hands as if I were performing surgery. When I finished he said the knot seemed to keep coming back to itself. I told him that is what a good knot does.

Then he asked me to write love on the lid in icing. My hand shook. I made the l too tall and the o came out lopsided, and I nearly started again, but the batch was already cooling and the sun was coming up grey over the car park. So it stays as it is, a bit wobbly, slanting down over the curl of the ribbon.

I thought about that box all morning. Nobody looks at a wobbly word and decides the baker failed. They just see that someone tried to say it properly. Come home at Easter. I will save you the end crust.

Love, Gran
