Looping script lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script lettering tattoo on the forearm, with words written in large looping cursive that runs diagonally down the arm. The linework is mostly single black strokes with some heavier sections, and the tattoo is set against plain, lightly tanned skin. The image is taken from a slight angle over a dark floor, with the lettering filling most of the frame.

The letter came up the valley on the Tuesday carrier, tied in baler twine with the stamp gone soft from rain, and Mrs Hesketh at the post office held it to the window for a long time before she could make out the name. The hand was all loops and tails, each capital doubling back over the one before it, so that Tom Ashby read like a row of fishing hooks. Nobody had lived at Low Scar since the flood took the footbridge in March.

She walked it up the lane anyway, because she had never once in thirty years failed to deliver a letter, and found the gate hanging by one hinge and a girl of about nine sitting on the wall with a jam jar of minnows. The girl said her uncle had written to her from Carlisle every week that summer, always in writing like that, and she had kept them under the lid of her biscuit tin. She did not want this one opened. She wanted to know whether the loops meant he was laughing or only tired.
Mrs Hesketh sat down on the wall beside her and opened it, since nobody else was going to. Inside were three lines and a pencil drawing of a bridge with every plank in place. Tell the girl I have built it back, it said, in the same tangled hand. She read it aloud. The girl screwed the lid onto the jar and went down the lane without a word, and the minnows, Mrs Hesketh noticed, had all turned to face the way she went.
